FORGIVE-3 words- to cover over. such as a lid and is the word for the lid of the ark of the covenant  This word is translated as pitch which was spread over the ark in order to make it water tight. If an offense has been made the one that has been offended can act as though the offense is covered over and unseen. We express this idea through the word of forgiveness. Atonement is an outward action that covers over the error.

He was displeased with the immorality with which the Moabites and Midianites had successfully tempted the people to worship Baal-peor, so he personally executed an Israelite man and a Midianite woman while they were together in the man’s tent, running a spear or lance through the man and the belly of the woman and thus ending a plague said to have been sent by God to punish the Israelites for sexually intermingling with the Midianites. Phineas is commended for having stopped Israel’s fall to idolatrous practices brought in by Midianite women, as well as for stopping the desecration of God’s sanctuary. He is commemorated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church on September 2.   Then stood up Phinehas [the priest] and executed judgment, and so the plague was stayed.  And that was credited to him for righteousness (right doing and right standing with God) to all generations forever.

THE REAL FUNCTION  Rom 3:20 For no person will be justified (made righteous, acquitted, and judged acceptable) in His sight by observing the works prescribed by the Law. For [the real function of] the Law is to make men recognize and be conscious of sin [not mere perception, but an acquaintance with sin which works toward repentance, faith, and holy character].

21 But now the righteousness of God has been revealed independently and altogether apart from the Law, although actually it is attested by the Law and the Prophets,

22 Namely, the righteousness of God which comes by believing with personal trust and confident reliance on Jesus Christ (the Messiah). [And it is meant] for all who believe. For there is no distinction,  AMP

 

Rom 5:20 But then Law came in, [only] to expand and increase the trespass [making it more apparent and exciting opposition]. But where sin increased and abounded, grace (God’s unmerited favor) has surpassed it and increased the more and superabounded,

 

Heb 10:1 The old plan was only a hint of the good things in the new plan. Since that old “law plan” wasn’t complete in itself, it couldn’t complete those who followed it. No matter how many sacrifices were offered year after year, they never added up to a complete solution.

Rom 3:28 For we hold that a man is justified and made upright by faith independent of and distinctly apart from good deeds (works of the Law). [The observance of the Law has nothing to do with justification.] AMP

 

Rom 3:31 But by shifting our focus from what we do to what God does, don’t we cancel out all our careful keeping of the rules and ways God commanded? Not at all. What happens, in fact, is that by putting that entire way of life in its proper place, we confirm it.

 

Gal 3:11 The obvious impossibility of carrying out such a moral program should make it plain that no one can sustain a relationship with God that way.
